The St. Luke School of Medicine, Assumption University of Thailand
Program on Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) (International Program), 2569 B.E.
Historical Background
The St. Luke’s School of Medicine at Assumption University was initiated by the vision of Reverend Brother Dr. Pratip Martin Komolmas, the University’s Emeritus President. He recognized the need to produce medical personnel to help address the shortage of doctors and public health personnel in the country.
Previously, he had received suggestions and cooperation from a group of doctors, mostly his former students from his time at St. Gabriel’s School.
However, the project to open a School of Medicine had to be delayed due to several obstacles. Then, in 2023, the year Revererend Brother Dr. Pratip Martin Komolmas turned 90, the university revived the School of Medicine project.
‘Saint Luke’ Designation
Reverend Brother Dr. PratIp Martin Komolmasnamed the School of Medicine at Assumption University the St. Luke School of Medicine. He explained the reasoning behind this name: The Catholic Church has many saints, but one notable is Saint Luke, a physician who, in ancient times, treated the sick and incarcerated. He later met and accompanied Saint Paul in proclaiming the Good News of God, becoming a disciple of Saint Paul. Besides being a physician, Saint Luke was also a great philosopher, one of the Four Great Evangelists of Christianity. Saint Luke used his medical knowledge and skills to help many patients and was beloved by all. Therefore, it was deemed appropriate to name the School of Medicine at Assumption University after Saint Luke, the patron saint of physicians, as St. Luke School of Medicine.
